Computing Low Secondary [Key Stage 3] (11 – 13 years old)

Computing education at KS3 aims to equip students aged 11 to 13 with essential digital skills, computational thinking, and an understanding of technology. It prepares them for the increasingly digital world they’ll encounter in their lives and future careers.

The national curriculum in England covers three key areas within computing:

Computer Science High Secondary [Key Stage 4] (13 – 16 years old)

The Computer Science IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a globally recognized qualification for students aged 14-16, providing a robust foundation in computing and programming. This course is designed to develop students’ understanding of the fundamental principles of computer science, including problem-solving, computational thinking, and programming skills.

The key parts in the IGCSE Curriculum are:

  1. 🖥️ Programming Fundamentals: Learn to code using pseudocode and programming languages (Python, Java, or C++), focusing on writing efficient programs.
  2. 🧩 Algorithm Development: Understand how to design and implement algorithms to solve complex problems.
  3. 💻 Computer Systems: Gain insights into the working of computer systems, including hardware, software, and networks.
  4. 📊 Data Representation: Explore how data is represented and manipulated in computers, including binary, hexadecimal, and character encoding.

The Cambridge International AS & A Level Computer Science provides a foundation for the study of Computer Science or related courses in higher education. This subject motivates students with a real passion for the subject and develops computational thinking and problem-solving skills in the students.

The key parts of this syllabus are:
